A machine I built started showing the banner “This copy of windows is not genuine. You may be a victim of software counterfeiting.” Then the machine asks you to get genuine software or resolve the issue later once you try to log in. This machine has Windows XP Home Edition SP2 and is 100% genuine. I went to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/ and ran their diagnostics. It seems that on every machine you try this dialog on, you must change some security settings in IE for the “ActiveX controls connect with Microsoft validation servers” test to pass. Once that setting is changed (they tell you to change it back once you’ve completed the test), all the tests pass and the machine shows as “Validation Complete!” But even after going through all this BS, the annoying banner warning is still there on the Welcome Screen. I called Microsoft to report a bug and they at first wanted $35 from me so I can help them fix their software. I told the operator that was rediculous even if they do refund my money if it is indeed a bug. Anyway, they gave me a case and told me a support rep would email me tomorrow. Anyone else been through this? Ideas?
Vrij ridicuul dat je 35 dollar moet betalen terwijl je een genuine versie bezit, maar er is ook een wat pragmatischer oplossing:
Log into safe mode stop the wgatray.exe from the taskmanager then goto system32 and delete wgatray.exe,WgaLogon.dll, and LegitCheckControl.dll
also goto system32/dllcache and delete wgatray.exe,Wgalogon.dll and LegitCheckControl.dll.
Then goto registry editor and go here HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinlogonNotify
delete all references to Wgatray.exeThis will remove the validation install and remove the message and you can wait till microsoft comes out with a hotfix for it.
